Obituary for Anna Sue Black Steward

Anna Sue (Black) Steward, 68, of Fulton passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

She was born in Callaway County, Missouri to Clarence W. Black and Myme Jane (King) Black on August 24, 1950. Both preceded her in death.

Anna went to George Washington Carver School in her early childhood and graduated from Fulton High School. Anna went on to further her education by being the first black to receive the Dr. Martin Luther King scholarships to William Woods University where she attended 1 year. Afterward, she attended Jefferson City School of Practical Nursing and received her LPN License. She then moved to Jefferson City and worked at St. Mary Hospital in surgery and later at Memorial Hospital on the surgical floor, where she remained until being shot in 1975. After this tragedy, she married Wendell L. Steward Sr. in 1981. She then returned to work for Vocational rehabilitation as a switchboard operator and receptionist for two years.

Anna is survived by her husband; two sons, Keon A. Black, and Wendell L. Steward Jr.; two daughters, Jewelena R. Kemp and Ciara Cheatum, all of Fulton; honorary brothers and sisters, Maurice Steward, Ramon Steward, Garland Steward (Cherrie), Gerald Steward (Theresa); sisters, Audrey Ray (John Glover), Anita Hopkins (Zach), Virginia Brown, Shelly Curtis, Cynthia Simmons, Sandy Galbreath, Sylvia Pittman, Bonita Law, Gladys Jones, and Ann Wilson; and her divas Tiny Johnson, and Mae Bedell; four grandchildren, Nakisha A. Black, Adavion Kemp, Jayda Thompson, and Kason M. Holland; a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and special friends.

Along with her parents, Anna was preceded in death by brother, Virgil V. Black; and dear friend, Marco Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Callaway Christian Church, 2051 Silver Drive in Fulton with Pastor Bob Washington officiating. Friends will be received from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Church of God in Christ, 331 Northwest Street in Fulton. Interment will be in Southside Cemetery.

Memorial donations are suggested to American Cancer Society or William C. Potter Foundation, c/o Maupin Funeral Home, 301 Douglas Boulevard, Fulton, MO 65251.
