Obituary for Richard G. Smart

Richard G. Smart, 86, of New Bloomfield passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

He was born on April 13, 1931, in Mokane, Missouri, the son of the late Samuel Richard “Dick” Smart and the late Julia Ann (Glennen) Smart.

Richard was united in marriage to Helen Jean (Guerrant) Smart on February 6, 1954. She survives his passing.

Richard was proud to serve his country in the United States Army 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War. During this time, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Following his service, he worked as self-employed carpenter and farmer. Active in his community, Richard served on the South Callaway R-II School Board and was a 4-H volunteer project leader and life-time member of American Angus Association. A man of strong faith, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Fulton where he served as a deacon. He was also a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Dixie Christian Church.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Helen; son, John Smart (Corrine) of New Bloomfield; daughter, Kathy Gerlach (Russell) of Jamestown; sister, Nellie Hosp; sister-in-law, Barbara Knife; grandchildren, Bethany and Daniel Smart; nephews, Larry Knife, David Knife, and Ken Hosp; and niece Linda Anderson.

Richard was greeted in Heaven by his parents; brother, Dr. J. Samuel Smart; and brothers-in-law, Howard Hosp and Russell Knife.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Fulton with Dr. Gary Shultz and Pastor Ben Montgomery officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Private burial will be in Mt. Tabor Cemetery with Pastor Don Daniels officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to First Baptist Church Benevolent Fund or Mt. Tabor Cemetery, c/o Maupin Funeral Home, 301 Douglas Boulevard, Fulton, MO 65251.
